Situated in DuPage County about 20 miles south from the heart of downtown Chicago, the city of Downers Grove began in 1832 when a settler named Pierce Downer founded the area. About 30 years later the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built tracks through the town and brought a number of residents along with it. Today, Downers Grove is home to a population of just over 49,715 and is known as a desirable Chicago suburb with excellent dining, shopping and numerous outdoor amenities.
Just along the east outskirts of the city lies The Morton Arboretum which encompasses over 1,500 acres of preserved nature. The arboretum also has a library, herbarium, maze garden, tram and plenty of space to enjoy hiking, biking and picnicking. Not too far from the arboretum is the historic Downers Grove Golf Club, established in 1892 as the nation's first 18-hole golf course. Downers Grove is also home to a little over 600 acres of parks open for recreation and relaxing. With plenty of year-round activities and something for everyone, Downtown Downers Grove has established a spectacular name for itself. The variety of shopping boutiques and restaurants attract many visitors, and one of the town favorites is the Tivoli Theatre. The 89-year-old historic movie theater includes a bowling alley, residential hotel and a number of stores.
Downers Grove hosts over 140 festivals and events for the community every year. In addition to its own lively downtown scene, Downers Grove’s close proximity to the heart of Chicago allows residents to experience the amenities of a larger city. Downers Grove is also home to a dozen public elementary schools, two public middle schools and two public high schools, as well as a number of private schools.
For anyone looking to live in the area, the median home value is around $321,100 which has seen an increase of a little more than two and a half percent over the past year. Although Downers Grove has a median list price per square foot of about $219 and is higher than the Chicago Metro average, the city offers an exceptional quality of live that has something for everyone.
